U.S. Business against Government over Illegal Immigration

Written on the 28th of March in the year 2007

So one of my biggest problems with immigration and all that is how business says one thing and government says another. Businesses bring immigrants in and government kicks them out. If I’m going to take this country seriously then they should be sending one message in all instances.

The latest thing I’ve come across is “Directo a Mexico“. This is a program that allows people to who don’t have a Social Security number to wire money to Mexico pretty cheap. You go to a participating bank and get an account and then wire money to Mexico for a small fee. Ok, so now we have these undocumented immigrants that the government labels as criminals, but then we have businesses catering to their needs. This is what I’m talking about, businesses try and make money off of these people while government blames them for our troubles.

As a business person, I rarely ever blame business. Instead, I blame the government for not setting up better laws. In a nutshell, business is a game and government gets to set the rules. If you don’t want undocumented immigrants working, then make it near impossible for companies to hire them, like was done in Colorado. It’s not realistic to rely on the altruism and ethics of businesses; they aren’t in business to be good people, they’re there to make money.

Some lawmakers are fighting against this so that businesses can’t profit from the small fee many undocumented immigrants would be paying in order to wire money back to Mexico. If government really wants to get rid of undocumented workers, then they should definitely strike down the idea. However, if a business sees an opportunity to make money, then fine, I think it’s a great idea. I think we should have this program, sure, why not? Undocumented workers have a legal and inexpensive way of sending money to Mexico, sounds good to me. If they work for their money, then it’s theirs and they can do whatever the hell they want to do with it.

Government needs to be consistent. There’s lot of contradicting reports, but I’m of the idea that undocumented workers help our economy. Government brings them in when we want cheap labor and then kicks them out when the U.S. no longer benefits. And by “them”, I unfortunately mean Mexicans because the U.S. doesn’t care about any other undocumented immigrants for some reason, they only want to get rid of wetbacks. Business has always only cared about one thing, making money. They’ll do what can be done to improve the bottom line. If undocumented immigrants are a problem, it’s the government’s fault.
